A great macaron debate.

hi there again. 2 posts in 2 days. what the ? i hear you say. well on my cyber travels today i discovered a macaron recipie that has filled me with equal parts of hysterical excitement and inspiration. it's let me thinking,  ''maybe i could try these''.
attempting macarons has been on my radar for over 18ths but i keep convincing myself that it's just going to be a disaster. i don't like to fail in the kitchen so hence i've chickened out. to eleviate the associated guilt surrounding the whole sordid situation - i have read every recipie, article, blog post, comment about macrons that i could get my hands on. i've watched youtube clips, and cooking shows own more cooking books than anyone should.

So the biggest debate apart from macaron vrs macaroon

seems to be to age your egg whites or not. there is as much discussion on this topic as there is on the 'heels vrs flats' debate.

ANYHOO - on todays cyber travels i found the recipie below on the Greengate blog and feel compelled to share it.

-- Ingredients for 10-12 macaroons:

Macaroon shells: 45g almond flour (for pistachio macaroons, substitute half the almond flour with ground pistachio nuts), 75g icing sugar, 1 large egg white, 25g caster sugar, 1-2 drops food colouring
Mix almond flour and icing sugar in a blender. Sift the mixture into a bowl.
Mix egg white and caster sugar in a separate bowl until the meringue forms soft shapes.
Carefully combine the 2 mixtures. Pour the mixture into a piping bag and pipe the macaroons into 3cm circles on a baking sheet. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Bake the macaroons for about 12 minutes at 160°C.
Buttercream: 75 g butter, 250 g icing sugar, ½ tsp. flavour extract, 1-2 drops food colouring
Whisk together all ingredients until the consistency is light and fluffy. Put the buttercream in a piping bag and assemble your macaroons.

IN FAIRNESS to the aged egg white debate, i've also included a more complicated recipie.

Another of my fave foodie blogs has posted several macaron recipies. the one that i'm dying to try is this one -
Meet Raspberri Cupcakes popcorn macaroon with salted caramel M  MMMMM.
here's the recipie peeps.
  • 110gm almond meal
  • 200gm icing sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 30gm caster sugar
  • 1 cup salted butter popcorn
  1. 3 days prior to baking the macaron, separate the white from the egg yolk. Allow it to age in the regrigerator by covering it with a cloth or paper towel. On the day of baking, remove from the fridge and allow egg white to reach room temperature before whisking.
  2. Whisk egg whites till it reaches a soft peak, gradually incorporate the caster sugar while beating. Whisk till a stiff peak is achieved (about 3 minutes of medium speed).
  3. Add 1/3 of the previously sifted almond meal and icing sugar into the egg white. With a spatula, mix the mixture, adding the remaining 2/3 of the mixture as you go. Continue mixing until the mixture is well incorporated and is of magma consistency.
  4. Pipe the mixture onto baking paper, leaving a gap of 2.5cm between each circle.
  5. Using a food processor, process the popcorn into small pieces, then sprinkle on top of the piped macronage.
  6. Allow the macaronage to sit for half an hour, this dries out the outer layer- thus when baked forms a crispy shell.
  7. Pre-heat fan forced oven to 120 degrees celsius.
Upon lightly touching the top of the piped macronage, the mixture should not stick to your finger. Once this has been achieved, bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes.
Once baked and cooled, I filled the macarons with salted caramel from Zumbo’s Chocolate Mousse Cake recipe.

the original post can be found by clicking here - Raspberri Cupcakes is simply an AMAZING blog.

now i've not tried either recipie but i swear to the gods of macarons that 2013 will be the year that i try to bake them. i'll bake both versions and report back.

pic from pinterest.
Now my glittery cyber friends no post about macarons would be complete without a little picture of my fave macaron in the world. [so far ]

Here is Lindts Champagne macaroon in all it's delish glory. the other macaroon in this pic is their Rose number and it's a winner too.
i can down a box of these babies in an embarrasingly quick time.
Now if anyone has a macaron story they'd lurve to share i'd lurve to hear it.
Now my pretties, off you go and enjoy the rest of your afternoon. Mr Glitter has a roast pork on the go and let me tell you all, the man sure can cook a roast. i like to think it's my influence but the man has a gift.
until next we meet in cyberspace.

Cyber Find Friday - A Day Late [sorry my bad]

A glittery hello on this Australia Day Everyone.

Part of the reason i decided to blog was to share the groovey cyber treats i come across with those who might find them interesting. Then i realised that rather than have multiple posts every day, i would just save them up and put them all into a single post. Hence Cyber Find Friday was born.

i will include in these posts a range of different things that will hopefully interest everyone. i'm going for the ' something for everyone ' approach. so with this in mind - away we go.......

Something for the tastebuds -

i have added the link above so you can grab the recipie, i think these little cookies are adorable and are an activity you could easily include your children in.

Another little yummie treat from 1 of my fave blogs, Torie Jayne

Strawberry truffles
Strawberry Truffles = happy little taste buds. here's the link my glittery friends.

Another delightful find also comes from Torie Jayne. I am totaly inlove with these clear mini drawers. they have been used here as a great way to store craft supplies but i want them for make up and jewellery.
Washi tape storage

i have been searching for them for along time but they are i think extremely overpriced. so when i found them on Tories blog - here is the link

clear boxes from Muji

i just about squealed as the price point is amazing. however as i proceded with my order, to my horror THEY DON'T SHIP TO AUSTRALIA - insert sulking woman here. and so my search continues.

Torie offers some great storage options for you crafty folk out there so i've included the link below.

And for your viewing pleasure-

i have been wanting to watch Hotel Transylvania for awhile now. [i will freely admit to indulging my inner child with a great kids movie now and again] i am pleased to report this great film didn't disapoint.
we meet Dracula as an over protective and doting parent who goes to extreme lengths to protect his daughter from the terrible humans. he constructs his hotel as a means of not only keeing his daughter safe but also providing all monsters with a human free zone to relax and holiday in. all goes to plan until his daughters 118th birthday when a human stumbles into the lobby.
the movie has alittle of everything. there are some very funny scenes and some very touching ones. it has a wonderful star studded cast and is well worth a look see.
Hotel Transylvania Poster

click here to watch the youtube trailer - it's worth it ...

well my glittery friends
i've taken up enough of your time but hopefuly sprinkled some glitter along the way..

Another horror movie disapointment...

I have been quite looking forward to seeing The Appartition but i found myself feeling utterly let down. Granted, there were a few ''yeah, that's alittle creepy..'' moments but on the whole the plot didn't make awhole lot of sense and the attractive female lead spent alot of screen time scantily clad. There are so many ways to make a movie scary, come on Hollywood - an original idea and a cohesive plot would be refreshing.

Unfortunately, i made the mistake of preordering this movie and am now left with it. I so should've just watched it on foxtel. Anyhoo it's not a movie that i'll rewatch or recommend.
Has anyone watched it and if so what were your thoughts ?

'And so that was Christmas for another year.....'

This post is tinged with sadness as we pack up Christmas here at Glitter HQ. I'm quite in favour of Christmas being a monthly celebration. Like macarons and of course glitter, you can never have too much Christmas.
Unfortunately Mr Glitter does not agree and i finaly had to give in and pack up my Christmas goodies. On Boxing day came the first, '' so we can pack it all up now ? ''. This comment was justifiably ignored. Since then, there have been untold sighs, raised eyebrows and pleas.

Is there anything sadder than a post Christmas naked tree ?

Perhaps sadder still is the sight of some of my Christmas goodies waiting to go back into their boxes.

My canine bestie decided to bring out a selection of his Christmas pressies, i suspect in protest of my packing up of Christmas..
Fab product alert...

I am a huge fan of Christmas Baubles and will confess to having a reasonable little collection, anyhoo i just about kissed my laptop when on my cyber travels i cam across this little marvel from Pinklily.
Yes that's right my lovelies - tis a bauble storage box.
Simply follow the very easy assembly instructions as your box arrives flatpacked, here she is showing the bottom layer all ready for said bauble collection.
And here she is with the second layer in. The size of the compartments are ajustable. And quite frankly i'm inlurve. I've ordered 2 more, to be used as general storage boxes.
I am a fan of Pinklily. Super great products, packaging and very quick service.
Here is the link for the boxes [ grab them while they are on sale ]
How do you feel about packing away Christmas for another year ? What delaying tactics do you use ?
Do you have any family traditions, i'd love to hear them.

Until next time

I've already decided i'm going to enjoy this experience and my head has been spinning with ideas for posts. [this might explain why i'm having trouble setting up said blog] [who am i kidding,i'm just cyber clueless]
